Interesting treasures from ACM
Durga
is a major Hindu Goddess. This one is made from sandstone in Cambodia in 7th or 8th century. Cambodia has a great tradition of stone carving. Today there are still lots of very skilled stone carvers found there.
Ancestor carvings
From Nias island, west from Sumatra. The people believed that the soul of the dying or dead could be transferred into the carving. There for these carvings served as “memorials” of their relatives.
Delftware spirit keg
A cheerful dutchman sitting astride a barrel. Probably made in 17th century in relation to VOC trade.
Stele with Buddha and Bodhisattvas
This limestone stele, from a cave temple in China was made during the Eastern Wei dynasty 534-550 CE. It depicts Buddha and two Bodhisattvas; Avalokitesvara and Maitreya. A Bodhisattva is someone who has achieved salvation, but chooses to forgo entering Nirvana (or heaven) to aid others.
